On June 4, 2008, the Florida Patient Safety Corporation (FPSC) formally endorsed SorryWorks! as a positive way to address medical errors. SorryWorks! is a nationwide movement to encourage disclosure after adverse medical events and, when appropriate, apology and quick resolution following medical errors. Hospital systems have seen a dramatic reduction in litigation and associated costs accompanied by an increase in patient safety with implementation of disclosure and apology programs. SorryWorks! rethinks the medical malpractice crisis, viewing it not as a legal/political problem, but rather a customer service challenge. It teaches providers how to address customer services challenges with pro-active problem solving techniques and enhanced communication, which reduces litigation while increasing satisfaction and quality for patients and families; and it reduces the anger felt by patients and families by injecting honesty, candor, and a real effort to fix problems experienced by patients and families.
